“The Flying Carpet” unites folk music inspiration with original works, landing loosely between the lines defining the genre of world music. The academic, rock-pop and acoustical musical experiences of the legendary Latvian folk-diva Ieva Akuratere meld with Zane Smite’s deep grasp and longstanding contributions to ethno-music (Ilgi, Risa zvejnieki, and others) to draw a new breath in the magically inspiring space of Latvian folklore, both singers’ voices surprising the listener with their rotating sequences of mutual harmony and opposition. Ilze Grunte enhances “The Flying Carpet” sound with her fine arranger’s and instrumentalist’s skills, masterfully working up both her own and Akuratere’s original compositions along with contemporary interpretations of Latvian folksongs. Rarely heretofore if ever introduced in such a context, unique tones are added to the ensemble’s sound by Ieva’s son Matīss, whose percussive arsenal stretches from the Indian tabla to various Brazilian percussions.
