DJ Raivis from Riga
QUOTE:
“First and foremost I am a DJ. Since beginning my career in music I have experienced a profound communication between the music audience and myself as DJ. I have learned to sense the different vibrations in this relationship, which enables me to influence and move the crowd to create an amazing atmosphere. It is always a new experience for me every time, and nobody knows in advance, least of all me, how it will end.”
Raivis Highdoven has gained considerable respect from DJ's across the music spectrum wherever he plays. His style weaves through all levels of house, laced with deep intelligent sounds, which consequently contribute to an emotional voice in the music he plays, whilst still including the newest computerised sounds that retain a sense of fun and are best appreciated in movement from the middle of the dance floor.
Raivis has experimented extensively, from pop right through to underground music, CD's to Vinyl and back, whilst investigating the latest technology. He believes that the main thing for him is how he presents both the music and himself, keeping to his own style and staying original. The best DJ's know that presenting music in this format is firstly about being able to appreciate and tune into the audience, then about being able to tap into their human experience and use the music to take everyone on an incredible journey. For Raivis music is his first and driving passion, something he describes as almost spiritual. Consequently, what gives him the greatest buzz is being able to share this profoundly personal experience as closely as possible with others via his musical choices.
He cites his early influences as Ugis Polis and DJ Janis Krauklis from 'European Hit Radio', and ongoingly, the more internationally known 'BBC Radio 1 / Essential Selection with Pete Tong'. As a teenager during 1997-1999 Raivis gained early valuable experience employed at the nightclub 'Underground' – 'The Best Party in Town – Riga'. It is often difficult for an ordinary person to cope with achieving such recognition at a young age, but Raivis certainly discovered that he really knew how to keep the dance floors full. At the same time he continued to train himself, expanding his technical skills into stage lighting which led to further opportunities of experience in the clubs 'Vernisaza' and '7th Heaven' in Riga. However, his passion for music begged his return to the music stage.
By age 20 Raivis had become a household name for many teenagers in Riga and was in such demand that he established himself in the enviable position of resident DJ in the premier club of the Baltic States, 'Club Nautilus'. From 2000 – 2004, every Friday and Saturday night, Raivis represented the best that 'Club Nautilus' had to offer, exciting and engaging the audiences who had come to see the visiting established artists such as Bob Sinclair, Robert Owens, Lisa Loud and Mark Night. Ultimately Raivis with his DJ colleague Norsky, were respected enough to take total responsibility for the music format in the club. Under the Nautilus Resident DJ status, Raivis was able to accept invitations to play in Germany, Finland and the UK.
Raivis is probably most well known during this time for his radio show 'The Nautilus Dance Collection' on 'European Hit Radio' representing 'Club Nautilus' where he introduced new singles of the week every Friday at the hottest radio playtime, 8pm – 10pm as 'The Start for Your Weekend'. Raivis is skilled in music production and the art of remix, making commercials and radio jingles for radio stations. More recently he has hosted the radio show 'The Saturday Warm Up' on 'Capital FM 101.
During his meteoric career in Latvia, Raivis performed at a number of major music events. In 1997 he entertained an audience 15 – 17,000 strong, at a concert for 'Radio Mix FM's 7th anniversary open-air party on the beach. In 2002 he played for 3,000 students from one of the biggest universities in Latvia, RTU. Also, he represented himself well at the DJ Parade which was a 'Mummy Troll' after-party for 6,000 people, and in the 'Pall Mall DJ Festival' sponsored by the Latvian TV station 'TV 5', where only the best Latvian DJ's were selected.
Most recently Raivis has chosen to step out of the limelight in his home country of Latvia in order to pursue and further his own understanding and appreciation of music in the UK. He has been concentrating on creating a London base and improving his English and now feels ready to re-establish his music career equipped with fresh ideas and a powerful desire to reconnect with his audience.
